Use of the digital rectal examination (DRE) to detect prostate cancer dates back to the time before the introduction of the PSA test, which occurred in Australia in the early 1990s. However, many men are reluctant to have a DRE. So an important question is whether DRE remains necessary in addition to PSA, or is the PSA test sufficient on its own?
