A landmark Australian clinical trial has found that robotic-assisted prostate surgery had no major benefit above the standard open surgery (radical prostatectomy). This important trial has received a lot of publicity and will no doubt spark conversation and debate for quite a while. Although the public discussion about this study makes this trial seem controversial, in the world of medical science it really isn't. This is the first randomised controlled trial to test the difference between these types of surgery. It was led by eminent Australian Prof Frank Gardiner and is published in The Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals. It has been commended for its scientific rigour by commentary articles. Therefore it's worth delving into this study to describe exactly what they’ve found and what this could mean for patients.
