Recent articles in the press claim that surgery for localised prostate cancer does not save lives. These articles refer the long-term follow-up results from the PIVOT clinical trial. It’s the latest in a long and ongoing debate about the pros and cons of treatments for men with localised prostate cancer. Critics of prostate surgery claim that the evidence against its benefit is “jaw-dropping and clear-cut”. But many clinicians and scientists claim that the PIVOT trial has serious flaws, and that surgery remains an important treatment option for localised prostate cancer. Who is right?
