Thursday 1 June 2017: Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is encouraging health service providers to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to become a host employer for a wave of specialist nurses who will be recruited for the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Service.
PCFA is aiming to recruit 14 nurses into the program by October 2017. The new recruits will join the 29 existing specialist nurses who are currently working in hospitals across the country.
The expansion of the specialist program has been made possible after the Federal Government allocated a further $5.9 million over three years to the program as part of the 2017-18 Federal budget announcements.
According to Ann Marie Alexander, PCFA Director of Nursing, recruitment of more nurses will help to meet the demand for multidisciplinary care, especially in regional Australia.
"The nurses that are currently placed across Australia are now an essential part of ongoing prostate cancer care for affected men and families. Many people are unaware that a prostate cancer diagnosis can lead to adverse clinical and psychological issues. Our nurses are prepared and trained to navigate men through these types of issues and more," said Ms Alexander.
"We hope health service providers see this as an opportunity to expand their own services and give their prostate cancer patients access to a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse."
Health service providers who are selected will be allocated funding towards the cost of employing the nurse for the duration of the program which is funded until 30 June 2020.
