Men with low-risk, localised prostate cancer often choose to manage their cancer by active surveillance. This allows them to avoid or delay treatment until the disease progresses, if it does. During active surveillance, regular biopsies are recommended, but it's not uncommon for men on active surveillance to forgo these biopsies. At the recent congress of the European Association of Urology, the need for biopsies during active surveillance was discussed at length.
