Australian researchers have uncovered a disturbing link between prostate cancer and suicide.

Two studies published this week have shown the risk of suicide is so significant that doctors need to be mindful of it when making a diagnosis and should flag at-risk patients.

Until now, the association between prostate cancer and suicide has not been well documented in Australia.

The first study, by Cancer Council NSW, found that men diagnosed with prostate cancer are at a 70 per cent increased risk of suicide compared with their peers.
