19 September 2024

For today only, Thursday 19 September, all donations made to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA’s) The Long Run campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

The Long Run challenges participants to run, walk or ride 72km during September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, to raise funds for the 72 Australian men diagnosed with the disease every day.

Thanks to PCFA’s friends at Telix, all donations received until midnight tonight,19 September, up to the value of $50,000, will be doubled, helping PCFA go even further in the fight against prostate cancer.

“This means, for today only, donations of $25 will become $50, donations of $100 will become $200, and donations of $300 will become $600,” PCFA CEO Anne Savage said.

“Donating to a Long Run Legend today doubles your impact for men affected by prostate cancer, and their families.

“Without these donations, we would not be able to offer men our free nation-wide hospital-based specialist nursing program, or our free national telenursing service.

“Our nursing programs support thousands of men and families every year. Our hospital-based service alone has provided nearly 620,000 occasions of care over the past ten years.

“This includes more than 310,000 consultations for men who live more than 100kms from a major city and face a 24 per cent increased risk of death due to the tyranny of distance.

“By donating today, Dollar Match Day, you’re doubling your funds to help PCFA provide specialist nurses who reduce the burden of prostate cancer on the community.”

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, accounting for more hospitalisations than any other type of cancer.

With more than 250,000 Australian men alive today after a prostate cancer diagnosis, and more than 26,000 men diagnosed each year, the role of specialist nursing services nationally is crucial.

“Our PCFA nurses are experienced registered nurses who have received additional training to make them expert nurses in prostate cancer care,” said PCFA Director of Nursing Sally Sara.

“These expert nurses are instrumental in improving health outcomes and overall survival, reducing the burden of prostate cancer on the community and the health system.

“National data confirms that specialist nursing services for men with prostate cancer significantly boost health-related quality of life for thousands of men living with the disease.

“We offer this free in-hospital service to men who are patients of a hospital or other healthcare setting. Our nurses provide support throughout the prostate cancer experience, whether a patient is newly diagnosed or has already had some treatment.

“This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we thank Australians for their donations, which enable our Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses around the country to have a remarkable impact on men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“We even have a PCFA specialist nurses team signed up to The Long Run. Donate to our team by midnight tonight and help us double our impact for all men diagnosed.”
