Northern Territory local and prostate cancer survivor Darren McCartney is lacing up for The Long Run this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to run a total of 100km to raise vital funds.

The Long Run helps love go the distance for all men, with participants walking, running or riding 72km to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).

Darren is taking part this year in honour of his Dad, who passed away in July last year from prostate cancer – just three weeks after his own diagnosis.

“If, by being part of The Long Run, I can help one person by raising awareness of early detection of prostate cancer, then it has been worthwhile,” Darren said.

“I was asymptomatic and only discovered my cancer through a full medical exam as I was about to retire.

“My first PSA result was in the high 5's, nothing of great concern but due to family history with the disease, a follow up test was done three months later.

“A further test revealed another rise in levels, so an MRI was done. This showed anomalies which led to a biopsy, with the result being prostate cancer with a Gleeson score of 7.

“From diagnosis at the end of June to a prostatectomy in November, the cancer had grown to the point where it was just within the margins of the prostate.

“Subsequent PSA tests have come back as undetectable.

“Without the diligence of my GP, specialist and the insistence of the surgeon to act sooner rather than later, my outcome may have been very different.

“I am taking part in PCFA’s The Long Run this year to raise funds for research and support to make what is a very difficult journey slightly easier for men diagnosed.”

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with more than 26,000 men told they have prostate cancer every year.

Australians can donate to Darren’s Long Run via https://www.thelongrun.org.au/fundraisers/darrenmccartney.

PCFA CEO, Anne Savage, called on Australians to advocate, donate, and discuss the disease this September.

“This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we are calling on all Australians to inspire community action in the fight against prostate cancer,” Ms Savage said.

“We are tremendously grateful for those participating in The Long Run, like Darren, who are stepping out to raise vital awareness and funds.

“Every dollar raised through The Long Run helps PCFA support all men affected by prostate cancer, and their families.

“Our ultimate goal through this campaign is to help make prostate cancer history.”

Thousands are expected to take part in The Long Run, Australia’s largest online event in support of families facing the disease. Visit www.thelongrun.org.au today.
