‘Tis the season to be jolly so we’re sharing some simple solutions for a stress-free Christmas.
While Christmas is often a time for celebration and rest, we know that it can be a stressful and lonely time for many people – particularly those impacted by prostate cancer and other health issues.
If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, know someone who has, or have lost someone to the disease, this time of the year may bring up additional feelings of grief and loss.
In addition, sometimes our expectations don’t meet reality, relationships can be strained, there is added financial pressure, and plans may have changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But a little bit of preparation can go a long way and help minimise stress this holiday season. Here’s some simple tips to help you get through.
Be clear about expectations
Set expectations for the day early to avoid causing any disappointment. Planning out your day with friends or family can make a big difference to keeping stress levels down. For example, if you’re hosting an event, talk to your guests beforehand to let them know about start and finish times, meal plans, and gift giving opportunities. This way everyone will be on the same page, and it will allow you to schedule in time for yourself around events.
Stay connected
Even if you’re spending Christmas alone, be sure to make plans to help combat feelings of loneliness or isolation. Connect with friends and family via phone or Skype, volunteer to do something that makes you feel good while meeting others, or check out some community events via your local council website. If you are alone, arrange to make your favourite meal, take part in an activity you enjoy or gift yourself something special.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Be active
Let’s be honest, over the festive period we often indulge in far more treats than we usually do which can impact how we feel. But the good news is, physical activity can help reduce the negative effects of stress and increases energy levels. Consider incorporating some active games like backyard cricket into your Christmas celebrations to reap the benefits.

Stick to a budget
The expense of buying gifts and attending events doesn’t take long to add up. Luckily there are plenty of low-cost ways you can still take part in the fun. Secret Santa is a great way to reduce the number of gifts you have to purchase, and it also allows you to set a budget. You could also consider having family and friends only purchase gifts for children. To limit the expense of hosting an event, try a more casual setting like a barbeque and encourage friends and family to each bring a plate.
