Jen Berton is a woman on a mission – to make sure no other families lose their husbands and fathers as she did four years ago, after her husband Mike was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Jen and her nephews, Logan and Ronan Grattan, will hold their third annual 4X4 fundraiser on Saturday September 21 at Watagans National Park, raising funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).
The event honours Jen’s late husband, much-loved local legend Mike Berton, who passed away from prostate cancer in November 2020 at the age of 53.
Local 4X4 enthusiasts are invited to join them for a day of driving, food and fun in support of the cause.
“My wonderful nephews come up with this idea to honour their Uncle Mike that was diagnosed at 51 with an aggressive form of prostate cancer,” said Mrs Berton.
“Passing at only 53, we as a family vowed if we could save just one family from going through what we did, it is worth speaking up. Mike should still be here.
We are touched and blown way with the ongoing support from local businesses and community, that have already generously donated prizes for raffles on the day. Lots of new businesses getting on board too which is fantastic.
Our main goal is to get the conversation started about prostate cancer, early detection and education on PSA blood testing.”
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with 72 men diagnosed every day.
Across the Central Coast alone over 3,400 men are living with prostate cancer, with an additional 300 men newly diagnosed each year.
The Berton family encouraged locals to show their support for the cause by donating at https://fundraise.pcfa.org.au/fundraisers/jenberton.
PCFA CEO Anne Savage described Jen as a trailblazer.
“Jen is a trailblazer, calling us to create hope in fighting a disease that too often goes unchecked,” Ms Savage said.
“We are indebted to Jen for her tireless advocacy and campaigning and can’t wait to see what this year’s event brings.
“We know that Jen and her nephews Logan and Ronan have a great day planned and urge people to get along for the rally and entertainment.
“The event is a great way to remember Mike and to get the word out about saving lives.
“The event makes a big difference to our work.”
