Prostate Cancer Awareness Month was marked with two exceptional events on the Limestone Coast in September.
Organised by leaders and members of the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group, based in Mount Gambier, and Naracoorte Prostate Cancer Support Group, the Prostate Awareness Evening was held on Monday September 18th at Mount Gambier City Hall.
With over 160 in attendance, the audience learned about detecting and living with prostate cancer, and gaining a better insight into prostate health and wellbeing from a specialist panel including Dr Adee Davidson, Urologist; Tracy Bryant, Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse; Stuart Wilder, Nurse Practitioner and Liam Jukes, Charge Radiation Therapist, as well as prostate cancer patient, Kevin Douglas.
“Each of these presenters gave a different perspective into prostate cancer, its treatment, effects of treatment, statistics and so much other helpful information,” said Richard Harry, leader of Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Leader of the Naracoorte Prostate Cancer Support Group Graham Hinze was instrumental in promoting the evening in the Naracoorte area and also drove the bus which ferried attendees from Naracoorte and Penola to the event while another bus also came from Millicent.
“With the number of people attending this meeting I believe it shows a massive demand for factual information into prostate cancer,” Mr Harry added. “I suggest the demand for information is not helped by the fact that Mount Gambier, the largest city in South Australia outside of Adelaide, has no resident urologist, no radiation treatment facility and only one part time prostate nurse.”
Meanwhile, the following Wednesday September 20th, the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group joined together with Tony Pasin PM, Federal Member for Barker to host a Big Aussie Barbie outside Mr Pasin’s electorate office in Mount Gambier.
Attended by Mr Pasin and Troy Bell MP, State Member for Mount Gambier, the event raised over $1000.
