On Friday, September 13, Wagga Wagga RSL hosted its ninth Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch (BEBL). While some consider Friday the 13th unlucky, it was a lucky day for the 300 local men who came together for a fantastic afternoon of fun and fundraising to support men living with prostate cancer.

Reflecting the impact prostate cancer can have on an individual and community, this year’s event welcomed women for the first time, with the region’s prostate cancer specialist nurse Katherine Hay and Linley Watson from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia in attendance.

Comedian and Master of Ceremonies Des Dowling kept the laughter rolling, and the crowd was entertained by Malcolm Johnston, a former champion jockey nicknamed "Miracle."

After a serious accident during his apprenticeship, Malcolm was faced with the decision to quit. But at just 15 years old, he showed determination and resilience, ultimately riding over 2,000 winners, including an impressive 25 races on the legendary horse Kingston Town, securing his place in racing history.

A highlight of the day was the $25,000 donation presented to Linley on behalf of PCFA, along with contributions to the local prostate cancer support group and CanAssist.

Michael Murray, leader of the Wagga Wagga prostate cancer support group and a key member of the organising committee, emphasised the event's importance, stating: “The Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch not only raises vital funds but also brings awareness to prostate cancer, reminding us of all of the importance of early detection and support.”

Attendees enjoyed a delicious three-course meal with drinks flowing freely throughout the afternoon.

Generous raffle prizes and an exciting auction featuring a painting by renowned artist Howard Steer, also known as the Broken Hill “Flying Doctor Artist”, added to the merriment. With a spirit of camaraderie and generosity, the event was a wonderful reminder of how a community can come together for a great cause.
