Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ marked its triumphant return June 21, 2024, at Kernot Hall in Morwell, marking its tenth anniversary having endured a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 in that time. Over 500 attendees gathered for a day of delicious food, exciting entertainment, and strong camaraderie in support of a great cause.
A highlight of the event was the presence of AFL icons David Rhys-Jones, Dane Swan, Daisy Thomas and MC Tom Siegert, who entertained and inspired the crowd with their stories and insights into the game. The occasion also featured heartfelt tributes to the late Bruce Ellen, a foundational member, Chair and passionate advocate for fighting prostate cancer until his passing earlier this year. Bruce was remembered by Ian Nethercote, the current Chair of the event committee, who described him as a quiet achiever driven by passion and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
Since its inception in 2012, the Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ has raised over $1 million, including contributions to funding a prostate cancer specialist nurse at their local hospital, various research projects and awareness campaigns. This year funds raised exceeded $100,000, highlighting the community's ongoing commitment to supporting crucial healthcare services. Reflecting on the day, one attendee summed it up perfectly, “Great day - Great food - Great entertainment - Great Camaraderie - Great Cause.”

The event not only celebrates community spirit and camaraderie but also honours the legacy of individuals like Bruce Ellen, whose dedication continues to inspire positive change within the community year after year.
