Local survivor and prostate cancer advocate Linton Blackwell raised well-over $4,000 during September to raise awareness and funds to help save lives, taking on an incredible 563kms.
During The Long Run, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) called on Australians to get active in the fight against prostate cancer, urging men and women to advocate, donate, and discuss the disease.
The Long Run raises vital funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Mr Blackwell is a prostate cancer survivor and leads the Baw Baw (Warragul) Prostate Cancer Support Group, alongside his wife Pam.
Prior to that they both led the successful Bairnsdale Prostate Cancer Support Group.
“Taking part in The Long Run means I get to join a national campaign that’s all about ensuring more lives are saved,” he said.
Mr Blackwell raised $4,897, which significantly more than his $3000 target.
“Every dollar raised through this campaign helps men like me access support, and funds research into new treatments and testing options.
“A lot of people think prostate cancer is only an old man’s disease which is just not the case. I encourage all men, particularly those with a family history, to talk about this disease and get a PSA test.
“The earlier this disease is detected, the easier it is to beat.”
Mr Blackwell encouraged the community to get involved in The Long Run, either via taking part or by donating to support the more than 26,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.
PCFA CEO, Anne Savage, urged local businesses and community leaders to get involved.
“The Long Run is a great way to inspire community action in the fight against our most common cancer.
“We’d love to see people signing up or sponsoring community champions Linton.
“Our ultimate goal is to help make prostate cancer history.”
