Shane O’Sullivan is a man on a mission.
The Shepparton local was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010 and is now the driving force behind the region's most successful annual fundraiser, the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch (BEBL).
The BEBL aims to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s Specialist Nursing Service and increase awareness of prostate cancer in the local community.
In recognition of his significant contribution to the community and widespread support for men’s health initiatives, Mr O’Sullivan was announced as the Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Awards in January.
Mr O’Sullivan said the award was a complete shock to him.
“It was a shock to me, as it was a personal award. I believe the event itself should have been recognised because so many people contribute to its success,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
Shane joined the BEBL Committee in 2011 after the event’s founder Chris McPherson encouraged him to get involved.
“Chris started the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch in Shepparton after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009,” he said.
“The inaugural event was a simple gathering where about 300 people attended and enjoyed a barbeque and a few beers at the Shepparton Showgrounds – and it’s been growing ever since.
“I decided to join the committee because I didn’t want any other men to go through what I went through when I was diagnosed.
“I was extremely grateful for the care and support the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses at Shepparton gave me personally, and every dollar we raise goes towards the important work they continue to do. They are lifesavers.”
Mr O’Sullivan said he’s proud of the event’s success. In 2024 alone, the event welcomed over 1,000 attendees and raised more than $250,000.
“Being the chairman has been enjoyable, but it helps enormously working with a great committee, the local Rotary Clubs and a generous community. The entire town should be as proud as I am of what we’ve been able to achieve,” he said.
“The community in Shepparton is just unbelievable. I can ring someone up and ask for a grand here and there, and they’ll give it to me. They’re just so supportive.”
Shane and the committee are already planning the 2025 event, which has become the largest fundraising event in the Goulburn Valley.
