Melmarsh PCSG celebrating 15 years of camaraderie
The Melmarsh Prostate Cancer Support Group, serving the communities of Melton, Bacchus Marsh, and surrounding areas in Victoria, is marking its fifteenth anniversary in December.
This milestone coincides with another special celebration: the 90th birthday of the group’s founder, Bob Mead, on December 24.
As they celebrated these special occasions recently at a local restaurant, the group reflected on the strength and camaraderie that has defined their journey.
“We were so proud to be able to recognise our group’s milestone and celebrate Bob’s incredible 90th birthday,” Group Leader, Rhonda Weir, said.
“It’s a testament to our group's support and friendship.”
PCFA Community Engagement Manager Linley Watson was delighted to attend the event and presented certificates acknowledging Bob and the group’s enduring commitment to their community.
The Melmarsh PCSG is led by Rhonda Weir who took on the role after her late husband, Alex, became an active member.
Initially, Alex was reluctant to discuss his condition, but after Rhonda encouraged him to attend the group, he became a vocal advocate, especially among his friends in the Country Fire Authority (CFA).
Rhonda’s involvement grew from secretary to president, reflecting her dedication to the cause.
Rhonda, supported by Grenville Kerton, continues to lead the group with enthusiasm, welcoming both individuals affected by prostate cancer and their partners.
“Encouraging partners to attend meetings can make a significant difference,” Rhonda notes.
“It’s often the role of partners to help their loved ones seek out support.”
The Melmarsh Prostate Cancer Support Group meets at 12:30pm on the first Thursday of each month at the Melton South Community Centre.
The group also participates in fundraising community events like Bunnings barbecues and casual coffee catch-ups to stay connected.
Having reached their fifteenth anniversary, the group is eager for more men and their partners to join.
