Local Cairns Support Group leader Brett Duck and other group members recently attended a Cairns Organisation United for Cancer Health (COUCH) fundraiser at the Ports North Big Aussie Barbie to raise awareness and funds.

Around 60 staff members, partners, and community members dressed in blue to show their support and raised more than $4000.

This included a $2,000 matched donation pledge by Ports North facilitated by COUCH for PCFA.

Ports North Services Manager Rick Goffin said sharing information and donating to prostate cancer research was vital.

“We make it our business to help support the most important causes to our people and stakeholders,” he said.

“One in five men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. This is a disease that will almost definitely affect all of us either directly or through close family and friends.

“Having been diagnosed myself two and a half years ago, I understand the difference made by the support of colleagues, family, and the cancer support community,” Rick added.

“This event is a reminder that so many people are out there with stories of survival, determination and, unfortunately, sadness.

“I hope we have been able to make those impacted feel understood and raise money for research and support to assist the work of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.”

COUCH CEO Wendy Hughes saw the importance of supporting the foundation and local groups.

“As a local charity, supporting local people and providing real outcomes.

“We strive to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer,” Wendy said.

Thank you to Wendy, Brett, Rick, and co. for attending, making a real difference in the region, and raising critical awareness for the staff, friends, and family.
