A new partnership between the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and the Victorian Men’s Shed Association (VMSA) aims to unite men in addressing the rising number of prostate cancer diagnoses in Victoria.
Anne Savage, CEO of PCFA, emphasised the importance of this initiative.
“More than 5,800 Victorian men are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and over 850 will lose their battle with it,” she said.
With 360 Men’s Sheds supporting over 20,000 members across Victoria, this partnership aims to create awareness, encourage early detection, and provide social support for those affected.
Jim Kane, General Manager of VMSA, added: “With our strong network, we can make a real difference in raising awareness and encouraging men to get tested.
“The risk of prostate cancer is too great to ignore.”
The key focus of this partnership is to improve men’s health and well-being.
Ms Savage highlights that around 60,000 Victorian men are living with prostate cancer, and research shows that those facing this challenge have a 70% increased risk of suicide, especially if they feel isolated.
“That’s why we’re encouraging collaboration with prostate cancer support groups and Men’s Sheds. By fostering strong connections, we can help promote mental well-being for men fighting the disease,” she said.
Moss Mahony, co-chair of the Lakes Entrance Prostate Cancer Support Group, welcomes this alliance.
“It is a very comfortable and natural union of groups whose highest priority is community well-being,” he added.
The Lakes Entrance Men’s Shed, which hosts the local Prostate Cancer Support Group, provides a welcoming space for members and their partners to share experiences and feel less isolated.
Moss hopes this partnership will inspire other local support groups and Men’s Sheds to create similar connections, leading to better outcomes for everyone involved.
With this partnership in place, both organisations are dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by prostate cancer throughout the Victorian community.
