As a professional health worker at the Tweed Heads Hospital and the Convenor of The Tweed Valley PCSG, Phil Jones doesn’t need anyone to tell him the importance of raising awareness in the community.
Phil Jones had been a registered nurse for 37 years when he was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, and now supports other men and their families impacted by the disease.
During this year’s The Long Run campaign, he and his team raised an incredible $3734 – using the opportunity to get out and about in the community.
“As a group we are trying to build our presence in the community across the tweed region, so men know we are here to help them if they need us,” said Mr Jones.
“Participating in The Long Run not only helped raise money but enabled us to reach out and let everyone know that there is a support group in the Tweed if they need to reach out for support.”
During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Mr Jones organised a prostate cancer awareness display in the Tweed Hospital foyer, chatting with patients and family members about the disease, early detection and how to get involved in the Tweed Valley PCSG.
“It has been our vision to revitalise the support group this year – and I am proud to say we are making it happen!”
Cheers to The Tweed Valley PCSG for their Long Run efforts. We look forward to following the group’s growth and are grateful for the support local men can now access.
