A swarm of Santa Clauses were out in force last weekend, making their way from pub to pub in Condobolin, New South Wales, to spread a very important holiday message for men: get your PSA checked.
“It all started seven years ago after my mates and I got bored and decided to go to the pub,” Jake, one of the organisers of the fundraiser, said.
“One of them said, "Let’s dress up," so we dressed up as Santa.
“There were about five of us the first time. We decided to do it again the following year, and about twenty blokes took part.
“One of the boys decided we should raise money for a worthwhile cause, so we decided to do it for prostate cancer,” he added.
Jake said several of his family members had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“It’s getting bigger and bigger each year, and all the pubs in the town are supportive and we have generated a fair bit of money with each venue,” he added.
Jake said that the pub crawl included the Condobolin Sports Club, the Railway Hotel, the Condobolin RSL Club, The Imperial, and the Red Cattle Dog Hotel.
“It’s now become a family-friendly event. It’s not just us blokes anymore,” Jake said.
“All the wives, kids and older men come along.
“It’s gone from just a day of getting on the beers to having a drink for a cause. We’re a close-knit farming community here, so all the farmers come together and have a good chat.
“In the first year, we raised about $1000, and this year, we’ve raised $2905.90 for PCFA,” Jake added.
Jake said the event has also encouraged men of the region to get their PSA checked.
“Many fellas bury their heads in the sand about it, but we hope the event encourages them to get checked when needed,” Jake added.
