In the serene landscapes of East Gippsland, Victoria, the battle against prostate cancer is being fought with unity and determination. Recently, PCFA community engagement manager Linley Watson met with support group leaders from Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, bringing to light the collaborative efforts thriving in the region.

With the assistance of prostate cancer specialist nurse Ashley Leach, two support groups, a mere 30 minutes apart, share experiences, raise awareness and provide support for those affected by the disease.

Wayne Stagg, leader of the Bairnsdale contingent, underscored the symbiotic relationship between the two groups. "Both groups support each other and swap information," he states. "Our collaboration extends beyond our meetings; we are keen for any person touched by prostate cancer to get in touch and find support in our community." Wayne's sentiment echoes the ethos of inclusivity and camaraderie that defines the support network.

Moss Mahony, a member of the Lakes Entrance group, shared insights garnered from the community. Particularly relevant given the current cost-of-living challenges, he highlighted the significance of initiatives like the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme, aiding with travel expenses for those who must travel a long way for specialist treatment, and the Continence Aids Payment Scheme, which provides more than $600 per year for continence products—a crucial issue for some prostate cancer sufferers.

For those in Bairnsdale, the Prostate & Partners support group convenes bi-monthly on every third Tuesday of odd numbered months under the guidance of Wayne Stagg. Meanwhile, in Lakes Entrance, Moss Mahony spearheads bi-monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of even months. Newcomers are encouraged to reach out prior to attendance.

In a world often shadowed by the complexities of illness, these support groups help to ensure that no one fights prostate cancer alone.
