A new support group dedicated to younger men fighting prostate cancer recently launched in Adelaide.
PALS or Prostate Awareness and Lifelong Support is a group of guys in their 40s and 50s, seeking to help support other younger men who have unique challenges with being diagnosed at such a young age.
PCFA ambassador, and fellow younger man, Neil Dickinson along with Mark Godfrey, Narelle Wadsworth (PCFA specialist nurse) who have been very supportive and active in seeing this new group take off, noticed a gap in the support network and decided to act of their instincts.
“Being diagnosed with prostate cancer can be a very lonely, isolating place so having a support network to lean on is absolutely crucial on your path with this disease,” Neil said.
“The men we’ve encountered in support groups in our community have been a wonderful support. No question that they are there for you in darker times but most of them are older, and their experience with prostate cancer can be different than a younger man.
“Which is why it’s important for younger men to have a unique environment catered for that specific experience to try to help each other out whilst being on this extremely difficult and stressful journey.”
PALS plan to meet once a month at 6.30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the GenesisCare Cancer Care Centre at 337 South Terrace in Adelaide.
