Formation

The support group was established in 1994 to provide support and information to prostate cancer patients and their families, to act as a forum for prostate cancer topics, to provide access to prostate cancer information and to contribute towards community awareness of the group and its role. The group is affiliated with PCFA and sponsored by Maroondah City Council and Department of Human Services.

Activities

Our group publishes and distributes a monthly newsletter and this includes details of our monthly meeting dates and details of any guest speakers. Our meetings provide an opportunity to discuss prostate cancer issues, to exchange experiences and ideas and provide support to prostate cancer patients and their families, supporters, carers and friends before during and after treatment.
Our meetings are open to all and wives / partners / carers / family members are encouraged to attend.

We have a range of leaflets, pamphlets, books and DVDs on prostate cancer and associated issues which are both informative and relevant to men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families. These are available for borrowing either at our meeting or by contacting one of our contact members shown above.

Meeting Details

Due to renovation works at Federation Estate in Ringwood and the closure of the venue, we have had to source new premises.

We are very thankful that Nick McGowan has offered the use of his Community Room at his office for, at least, the next two years.

We will be in the new premises as of January Tuesday 28th at 7.00pm for our first meeting of the year.

Affiliations

Ringwood Prostate Cancer Support Group is very proud to be associated with the Burton-on-Trent Prostate Cancer Support Group in Staffordshire in the United Kingdom, our “brothers across the sea”.

The Burton Prostate Cancer Support Group was founded by Jyoti Shah and Sarah Minns of Burton Hospital to offer additional support to individuals and their families who are living with prostate cancer. The concept for the group evolved from screenings that they have been holding in the last 18 months at Burton Albion FC. At the inaugural meeting held in January 2017, it seemed sensible that the group be run by those who had been suffering from prostate cancer with support from Jyoti Shah / Sarah Minns and Burton Hospital.

Having listened to cancer sufferers it soon became evident that there was a need to support both the men affected as well as their families. This enables a deeper understanding of the difficult journey the sufferers and their families have to endure. It further allows people to connect with others who have been through similar journeys. Another key aim of the Group is to encourage men and their families to share personal experiences and to support each other.

The inaugural meeting was on 30th January 2017 at Burton Albion Football Club which was attended by around sixty people. Since then, the Group has been holding regular meetings and attracting influential speakers.
