Formation
Prostate education and awareness began in our region in 2000 and in 2002 evolved into the Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group which works closely with PCFA, the Sunshine Coast office of the Cancer Council Queensland, hospitals, and medical services across the region. As at February 2019, our group has over 500 members.
Activities
Monthly meetings are attended by 80 - 90 people including partners and we actively encourage men to bring their partners. Morning tea is provided and gives opportunity for participants to share experiences and for newcomers to gain more information. We have a guest speaker at each meeting and these speakers give talks on various relevant medical and allied health subjects. A wide range of published information from various sources is available free of charge at each meeting.
Our brochures and information cards are distributed to approximately 240 GPs, urologists, radiation and medical oncologists, hospitals, medical centres, other health professionals, chemists, libraries and additional appropriate outlets throughout the Sunshine Coast region.
Meetings are publicised in brochures and the media. As part of our awareness program we provide guest speakers for community groups and service clubs.
In addition to meetings, we have four members of the Group Committee available to provide telephone contact and support for men coping with diagnosis and treatment, or for men and their partners just seeking more information.
